Another win for in-form Reserves

DUNS 2, BERWICK RESERVES 3: Duns, who included 15 year old goalkeeper Phil Smith in place of the injured Scott Lumsden, were unlucky not to take a point from this game. Reserves’ coach Mark Lamb was disappointed with his team’s performance which lacked fluency.

The nearest thing to a Duns’ goal in the opening stages was a low shot from outside the ‘D’ by Conor Devaney which screamed inches the wrong side of Kieran Beveridge’s post. Phil Smith saved from his Berwick namesake, Greig, but it was Berwick who scored first. Kenny O’Brien rounded Andrew Douglas on his way into the box before providing the ball for Callum Wyllie’s 23rd minute goal.

Beveridge almost knocked a stinging shot from Douglas into his own net before the first Duns’ goal arrived. A deflection helped Steven Burns’ cross find Aidan Lauder perfectly placed on the goal line to complete the move.

Berwick went back in front ahead of the break. Wyllie’s long flick left the Duns’ defence exposed. Phil Addison took advantage, lobbing the ball beyond the helpless Smith.

The new half opened with Regan Graham skipping past home defenders to create a chance for the unmarked Burns but he only managed a weak strike which rolled wide. Within seconds, Berwick stretched their lead. A bouncing ball reached O’Brien whose lethal finish beat Smith at his near post.

Ten minutes into the half, Gary Renton headed a James Brydon corner to Lauder to score a second goal at close range. Lauder almost engineered a second Duns’ equaliser with a low ball into Burns. Luckily for Berwick, Beveridge was right in front of him and the ball came back out off the keeper’s legs.

Three times in the final two minutes, Jordyn Gill’s big boot sent towering kicks back into the visitors’ half as the Reserves adopted a safety first policy with Duns working hard to snatch a draw. Yet, Berwick almost had the last word. Only Smith’s good positioning stopped Ross Brady as he cut in from the left on the end of a Jamie Doris-inspired counter attack.
