The Freedom of Information officer fined the council £250,000 after a member of the public found 676 files at a recycling plant in a supermarket car park in September last year.
If SBC were to pay the fine within the next month, the amount could be cut to neare £200,000.
Jim Fullarton, Conservative councillor for East Berwickshire, attended the meeting to give an update on SBC’s reaction to the fine. “The council think that this is excessive,” he said.
“The issue is that material was to be put on disc and that didn’t get into the public domain.
“That contractor is now no longer in business. I think everyone learnt from this.”
Councillor Grant made clear Eyemouth Community Council’s sadness that a fine of a quarterr of a milllion pounds would effectively be paid by the taxpayer.
Eyemouth Community Council asked for their serious concern to be taken back and relayed to SBC at the first opportunity.
