LAST Tuesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 234 store cattle which sold at extreme rates in keeping with other centres, to a large ringside of buyers.

Steers sold to £1290 for a Char.x from J.A. Riddell, Newstead, while heifers sold to £1200 for a Char.x from the same home.

AT St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 112 clean cattle, 60 OTM cattle, 1,733 old season lambs and 674 ewes.

Bullocks (74) averaged 218.2p per kg and sold to 245p (+1.1p on week), heifers (37) averaged 219.6p per kg and sold to 247p (-1.1p on week), one young bull sold to 200p (n/c on week), and 60 beef type OTM cattle averaged 157p per kg and sold to 211p (+12.5p on the week).

Old season SQQ lambs averaged 178.5p per kg and sold to £86 (+13.2p on week) while the 674 ewes averaged £48.34, and sold to £113, heavy ewes £62.96, light ewes £41.67.

THE Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 43 prime cattle, four young bulls, 18 over 30 month cattle, 8,865 prime hoggs and 6,975 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

A shortage of numbers of prime cattle resulted in a fantastic trade, a much improved show of bullocks saw the sale top at 240.5p and 237.5p for Limousins shown by D.J. Garthwaite and Son, Wyseby Hill Cottage, Messrs Garthwaites run of cattle levelled at 229.7p. Other Limousin bullocks sold to 235.5p and 234.5p from J.D. and D. Nicholson, The Gill. Limousin heifers sold to 229.5p from Messrs Garthwaite, Wyseby Hill Cottage.

Young bulls were a shortage of real quality and saw trade top at 205.5p for a Limousin shown by Messrs T. Armstrong and Son, Sceughdyke.

Less cast cows on offer and a large portion of them being lean plain cows, the meat cows sold very well. Top price of 194.5p for a Limousin from Mr J. Watret, Burnside. British Blue to 160.5p shown by J.F. Latimer, Rinnion Hills.

A large entry of 8,865 prime hoggs and an excellent quality show forward attracted more buyers. Trade was excellent throughout the whole sale with the average unchanged on the week at 172.2p per kilo (SQQ 175.1p).

The sale topped at £100 per head for Texels from Dinwoodie Green and to 270p per kilo for Beltex from Green Aton.

The 1,657 lightweight hoggs were a big entry with trade again on par with last week. Top of £74.80 for Texel from High Greenhill, £65.80 High Crubasdale; Beltex £72.80 Bellmount, £66.80 Lower Ashtree; Charollais £64.80 Higher Grenofen; Greyface £63.80 Ruidhall; Suffolk £63.20 Maryhill, £51.80 Archerbeck; Hill Cheviot £58.80 Hillend, £57.80 Airyolland; Blackface £55.80, £51.80 Milnmark; North Country Cheviot £51.50, £50 Hownam Grange; Swaledale £46.80 Hendra; Jacob £44.80 Horsecrook; Herdwick £36.80 Ashley Park.

A similar entry of 6,975 cast ewes and rams attracted the usual buyers, all classes were well bid for with trade slightly up on the week, especially for heavy pure Texel ewes.

LAST week Border Livestock Exchange Ltd sold 114 prime cattle including 39 cows, 1,574 prime sheep including 348 cast ewes and 174 store and breeding cattle.

Prime cattle continue to firm with all types keenly sought after. Aberdeen Angus cross heifers from Fenwick Steads, Belford, sold to 410p per kg to Well Hung and Tender, Berwick. Home cred Continental steers from Lochside Farm, Yetholm, sold to 370p per kg. Dairy OTM heifers from Lowick Northfield, Berwick, sold to 320p per kg.

Lambs also firmed on the week as numbers shorten and demand increases. Export weights sold to £79.80 and 390p per kg from Tullochallum, Keith. Texel lambs from Bowerhouse, Oxton, sold to 380p per kg and £79.80 per head. Continental cross lambs from Blackcastle Farm, Pathhead, sold to 385p per kg.

Breeding cattle starting to sell in larger numbers with quality Limousin cross bulling heifers selling to £1,300 for a 20 batch from Upper Nisbet Farm, Jedburgh.
