The email made a request for money but the recipient declined and contacted police. Similar emails have been sent to other residents in the Borders and police are urging anyone who receives one to come forward.

A police spokesman said: “The emails claim to be from a person who has met financial difficulties abroad and asks the recipients for assistance by wiring money online. Anyone who receives such an email should not reply or transfer any money but should contact police immediately.”
