Special requests to fly the flag over SBC’s headquarters are currently being refused, despite the fact that many other regional councils and the Scottish Government in Edinburgh have flown the flag.
The council has previously stated that it denied permission to fly the rainbow flag in the past because the LGBT community is regarded as a “special interest group” rather than a “minority group”.
Alistair Lings, chair of the Borders Bisexual, Lesbian and Gay Group, described the council’s policy as “deeply flawed.
“The rainbow flag should at least be flown to mark the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia in May,” he added.
SBC expects to conclude a review into its flag flying policy in the new year.
