In April this year the speed limit for heavy goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes was raised from 40mph to 50mph on English and Welsh roads but remains at 40mph in Scotland. Speed limits for the HGVs on dual carriageways was also increased - from 50mph to 60mph - but remained the same in Scotland.
It is the first cross-Border variation of speed limits following the Scotland Act 2012 devolving the power from Westminster although Scotland may fall into line with the rest of the UK at a later date.
The Scottish Government has introduced a trial HGV speed limit increase on the A9 between Perth and Inverness from October, to coincide with the introduction of average speed cameras.
The confusion the different speed limits was causing for lorry drivers was raised at last week’s Berwickshire Area Forum where it was suggested that signs need to go up at the England/Scotland border reminding drivers of the speed limit differences.
A Transport Scotland representative at the meeting in Duns indicated that they were aware of the situation and that signs at the border - not just Lamberton but Carter Bar, and A7 - have been discussed.
European speed limiter requirements are unchanged and must be set at 56mph or lower.
