Formed in 1997, the Merse Singers have performed all over the Borders and north Northumberland, most recently giving a summer concert in Paxton village hall.
But although their shows are always well received, the choir giving them has seen its number dwindle to 20, a massive drop in the nearly 40 members it boasted just a few years ago.
The Singers new season is due to start on September 8, but between now and then they have two things at the top of their to do list: find a new musical director and find some more members.
The group have been led in recent years by Veronica Gilbert but she is now taking a back seat due to family commitments.
Whilst Veronica and others are happy to step in from time to time, the choir need someone to take on the MD role on a permanent basis.
The Singers are looking for someone who, whilst empathetic with the fun and community spirit of the choir, can lead them and bring the best out of members, both in rehearsals, and at any future concerts.
The new MD would have control over the music the choir sings, and some remuneration would be offered for their efforts.
In terms of new singers beginners and seasoned vocalists are welcomed along to the Singers meeting on Monday, September 8 at 7.15pm in Paxton Village Hall.
“Without someone to present the music to us, there’s a distinct possibility the choir will fold which would be a real shame as we do a lot of good work in the area for charity,” commented Singers secretary Alan Cater
“And we also need some new male blood particularly. A few of us are getting to a certain age now and we could do with some youth in our ranks!
“People don’t need to audition to join, we do it for fun and it’s a great way to meet new people.”
Anyone interested in joining as MD or a member should email [email protected] or ring 07885783995.
