Spatz and Co play the old favourites including works by Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, and later, Acker Bilk and his contemporaries.

They also play more modern pieces affiliated to the jazz canon, music by Michael Bublé, Van Morrison, Gerry Rafferty and Nilsson being examples.

All of their music has a common theme, a strong melody with a smooth jazz delivery.

Vocalist guitarist and pianist Roy Mac said: “Our focus is on the melody, which is what the original music was all about rather than an emphasis on radical improvisation.”

He added: “And so fundamentally, our music is immediately recognisable as the song or tune that was originally intended.

But, he said: “Of course we improvise, and write our own arrangements of numbers to suit our particular ensemble’s make up, but we always try to remain true to the original tune or melody.”

Organiser Bob Wallum of Watch Promotions said: “This will be our first show within the jazz genre and we are very excited and looking forward to them playing for our community in Longformacus.”

Spatz and Co appear at Longformacus Hall on Saturday October 11.

Doors open at 7.30, tickets are £8 and there will be a full bar.
