The Scottish Borders Food Net-work aims to encourage Borders food-providing and producing businesses to work together and promote the use of Scottish Borders produce within the region and beyond. With this in mind, the network are holding an informal evening of discussion with food in the convivial settings of various venues throughout the months of April, May and June.
The format for the evening will be to introduce the Scottish Borders Food Network and explain the benefits of joining the organisation.
Earlier this year the network held the highly successful Scottish Borders Taste Awards, which demonstrated the willingness of the region’s hospitality businesses to source quality local produce, the ability of local producers to supply a wide range of produce and the eagerness with which the general public, including visitors to the area, became involved in the competition. The competition returned 570 votes from the general public, with 35 per cent of these from outwith the Scottish Borders.
This year’s winning establishments are now being given the unique opportunity to demonstrate their culinary skills to the public at the Royal Highland Show in June. They will recreate their award-winning dishes including the best Borders breakfast, lunch and supper dish in the cookery theatre - a fantastic opportunity to showcase their businesses at an event that attracts 160,000 visitors over four days.
Denise Walton, of Peelham at Foulden, is a producer and member of the Scottish Borders Food Network, and said: “The Scottish Borders has an abundance of sensational, locally sourced food products from its stunning landscapes and we want other food producers in the area to forge stronger links and build on our reputation for wholesome, quality food.”
The dates and venues for the discussion evenings are as follows: April 19 - Carfraemill, Oxton, Lauder; April 28 - Turnbull’s Delicatessen, Hawick; May 3 - Cobbles Inn, Kelso; May 10 - Allanton Inn, Chirnside; May 24 – Sunflower, Peebles; June 7 - Burts, Melrose.
