All roads will lead to Berwick this easter weekend for the annual Berwick 7s tournament at Scremerston..
The event, to be held on Sunday, April 20, is now one of the highlights on the local sporting calendar, and this year there will be a touch of the Caribbean with Trinidad and Tobago listed amongst the teams taking part.
As usual there is a strong Border contingent with Melrose, Gala, Hawick, Peebles, Selkirk, Kelso, Jedforest and Earlston competing.
Edinburgh Accies, who were the surprise packet at the Melrose 7s last weekend, where they reached the final, are also included, along with Edinburgh University and Watsonians, who were last year’s winners of the event.
Interest from south of the border will centre around Alnwick, Morpeth, Northumberland, and of course the hosts themselves.
The competition kicks off at 1pm with the first tie between Gala and Morpeth.
Games will then be played at a regular interval with the final scheduled for around 5.40pm.
As is usual, the tournemant will form part of the prestigious ‘Kings of the Sevens’ League which will run over the coming weeks.
Berwick will face Alnwick in the first round and coach Colin Young said: “Obviously, as the host club, we want to put up a good showing, but we know it won’t be easy.
“There are some good sides in this year’s competition and it will be very difficult to call.
“The Border sides didn’t perform too well at Melrose last weekend and I am sure they will want to feature more in this competition, especially with points at stake for the ‘Kings of the Sevens’ Series.
“Berwick sevens is always a good day, it is a chance for the club to make some money, and all we can hope is that the weather stays fine and the crowds turn out to support it.”
