Three Borders mountain bikers secured impressive finishes over the weekend at the Scottish Downhill Association (SDA) racing in Innerleithen.
Blair Aitchison of Melrose finished first in the Senior Men’s category, while Reece Wilson of Duns was third among the Elite men.
Gus Meldrum of Jedburgh was fourth in the Juveniles – just half a second off third place.
The locality was playing host to round two of the SDA’s tournament for 2016, in which the town’s local mountain bike trails were tackled by around 250 riders.
The event ran over Saturday and Sunday on a track described on the SDA website as “undoubtedly the best natural hill to date in Scotland for mountain biking. Terrain, material and facilities always make it a favourite with riders.”
The spring-like weather meant surfaces were dry, and fast, although occasionally slippery. Tracks set off from the top of Plora Rig and were built to include an eclectic mix of light rooted sections, jumps and berms. Courses also varied, taking a mix of all terrains available, natural loamy soil at the start to fast and loose hard-packed sections, through fire breaks, road crossings and bridging dry stone walls.
