For the second year Kelso stages a meeting in the holiday period between Christmas and New Year with racing on Monday, December 29 with the first race off at 12.15pm and gates opening at 10.15am.

A cracking seven race card is headed by a race to celebrate the great Monteith dynasty when Colonel Willie and his son Peter will be fondly remembered for their great exploits on the turf over many years.

Sheila Monteith has organised the family and Dennis Coppola has very generously joined in to provide a £10,000 purse for the winner of a 2m1f Handicap Chase which is sure to be very competitive. Dianne Sayer has her horses in top form and could be represented in this by Endeavor who was third in this last year. Selkirk trainer Stuart Coltherd, whose son Sam rode his first winner at Alnwick’s recent point to point, is planning to enter Aye Well, a horse placed over course and distance in November.

Robin Lees, the highly respected owner of a chain of hotels in the Borders, sponsors the Mares Novice Hurdle under the name of The Newcastle Arms in Coldstream. Malcolm Jefferson landed this 12 months ago with Retrieve The Stick and he will be keen to try and keep the prize at his Malton yard.

Other races on the day are kindly being sponsored by The Children’s Immunology Trust, which is based at The Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh and the Thomson Family.

The oddly named Handicap Hurdle has the title of The BARK Woof Miaow Squeak Race to draw attention to the tremendous work done by the BARK Charity based in Berwick .

A new sponsor to Kelso – Kilco International Limited are a hugely respected Science and Solution Business based in Lockerbie and they sponsor the 2m 5 ½ f Handicap Chase. This race fits the bill for Ann Hamilton’s Edmund who has been placed at Kelso in the past for his Northumberland connections.

Kelso has secured the first Veterans Chase ever to be run in Scotland. This 3m Class 2 Chase will have a total prize fund of £30,000 and be staged at the Border Track on Sunday , January 11.
