Local athlete Nathan Cox (17) represented Northumberland in the Inter Counties cross country championship at Temple Park, South Shields.
The field was made up of teams from Cleveland, Cumbria, Northumberland, Yorkshire and Durham and despite being one of the youngest in the U19s run, Cox ran a well judged race to finish in a great second place and was the first Northumberland athlete home.
Coach Henry Gray said: “Despite the fact that Nathan didn’t win I rate it as his best ever cross country run.”
Cox will now go forward to represent his county at the English Schools Championship Final at Blackburn on March 15. This will cap a busy programme for Cox as he is also competing for the North East of England at Birmingham for the British cross country championships on March 7.
