Manfred Mann brought down to earth
Pop royalty got a mixed response in Berwickshire back in August 1964. Manfred Mann and his band appeared at earlston, and made the front page of ‘The Berwickshire News’ while doing so. Expectations were high for the group, as their record, ‘Do Wah Diddy Diddy’ was at the top of the hit parade at the time. However, the ‘News’ reported that Manfred, born Manfred Lubowitz in Johannesburg, South Africa, was described as being laid low by what was described as ”a bout of influenza”.
However, despite being wrapped up in blankets for his photo, his performance apparently nearly caused a riot.
