Eyemouth’s Jim Gilchrist, a journalist, was sent on his toughest ever assignment in February 1990, when he took part in the Malaysian International Air Race, the longest such event in aviation history.

The race consisted of 50,000km round trip from Paris to Langkawi in Malaysia and back again. “To take part in the race is really the chance of a lifetime,” said Jim, who celebrated his 30th birthday while flying over Jordan, at the time. “Usually the closest you get to reporting on an event like this is the take-off and landing stages.”
