Teenage motocross ace Jack Fletcher has his mind geared up already towards being a future British champion.

The 14-year-old, from Duns, recently won the Scottish championship in his category with an entire round to spare.

And the Berwickshire High School pupil is hoping for many more years of success in the sport he loves.

The last year or so has been a transitional spell for Jack, with the step up from a small-wheel to large-wheel 85cc accompanied by practising and getting used to the new machine at various events around Britain.

He aimed for a top-10 finish in a seaon of British championship events and ended in ninth so was reasonably pleased with his progress during a “learning curve” year.

Jack’s dad Mark, himself a bike enthusiast, said his son proved a natural on two wheels when he started in 2015 and quickly made a mark in club competitions at four different age levels.

This year’s Scottish championship consisted of four rounds held around the country – in Tain, Duns, Rhynie and Leuchars – featuring around 20 to 35 riders at each.

Jack had the title sewn up after round three.

“At Leuchars, we were we were there for the fun of it,” said Mark. “He’d had a good season and it was enjoyable.”

Racing has been quieter this year because of covid-19 restrictions but Jack, also an experienced mountain biker, hopes to have another crack at the Sottish title next year.

“It was a well-run event. He enjoyed it and a lot of his friends are in Scotland competing,” said Mark.

“It’s nice to race against them and there is good banter between them all.”

Jack has so far managed to say injury-free in his career, in which his ambition, at the moment, is to be British champion.

“He lives for his bike,” said Mark. “Every weekend, we are away.

“He likes doing jumps and loves going fast - he loves everything about it. He is quite a clever rider – he knows what he has to do but also knows if he’s not comfortable about something.”

Jack was also grateful for the support he received from the firms JB Racing Suspension, STS Off Road, AD Forestry and Crawford Engineering.
