Berwick Ladies won the Northumberland Hockey A League at the weekend with a win over Whitley Bay.
Berwick travelled with only 11 players but were in a positive frame of mind.
They took an early lead through Michelle Stewart who caught the keeper off-guard.
Whitley, with their cage rattled, upped their game, but Stewart found the net again to put the visitors 0-2 in front.
Whitley put Berwick’s defence under pressure with Susan Blackett and Jodie Williamson holding strong but the home side found the net after Michelle Gray saved a couple of earlier attempts, which made it 1-2 at half-time.
After a pep talk from captain Reed at half time, Berwick came out a different team using the space and passing the ball around the midfield well.
It wasn’t long before they started to add to their tally, with Linzi Hogg making it 1-3 from a penalty corner.
Rebecca Murray then pushed hard to set Stewart up for her third goal and not long after a one-two with Caitlyn Young, Stewart had a fourth.
By this time Whitley’s heads were dropping but with Berwick’s league win in their sights they pushed hard with a through ball from India Guthrie towards the circle which reached Siobhan Murphy who smashed an excellent strike home from the top of the D.
The scoring was completed when, from another penalty corner, Lauren Nisbet found the net with a fancy bit of play for Berwick’s seventh goal.
