Berwickshire mountain bike racer Steven Turnbull has started the new race season as he started the previous season - on top form.

After a long winter the 2013 mountain bike race season is now finally underway for the Wooler-based Team Cheviot Hill Racers and this year the first race was the club championships which were held on a local track near Wooler.

With a record field of over 40 club members, the weather stayed mainly dry and the racing was competitive, exciting and times very close.

This year’s overall club champion is again Steven from Coldstream who retained the title he won last year.

Steven also lifted the award for top senior on the day.

He just finished ahead of the previous two time winner Ben Hall by less than one second to take the fastest time of the day.

All of the other age catagories where just as close with many of the winning margins around the one second mark.

The winners were as follows: Juvenile - James Elliott, Youth – Dan Butterfield, Women – Mairi Gillis, Veterans – Michael Strangeways, Masters – Ash Reynolds, Juniors – Joe Mallen and Seniors – Sten Turnbull.

Team Cheviot Hill Racers are most grateful to all the friends and family who turned up to help and support and to Carly Robertson for the photographs.

While all this was going on Team CHR club member James Purvis had made the eight hour journey down south to Combe Sydenham to compete in the opening round of the Saracen British Downhill Series, riding for his new sponsors Ride Cycles.

This was his first race since moving up from Juvenile to Youth category and he got off to a great start with second place in seeding.

Unfortunately a crash on his race run meant that James eventually had to settle for sixth place but this was a solid start to the season especially as he is one of the youngest in the category.

Next up for the team is the opening round of the Scottish Downhill Series round one which will be staged at Innerleithen.

This will be closely followed by the first round of the UK Gravity Enduro series, also at Innerleithen, and the first round of the Northern Downhill held at Kidland Forest near Rothbury.

All details of previous and future races can be found on the club’s website or on the club’s facebook page.
