Eyemouth United 4 Berwick Rangers Reserves 2: In a cracking match, devoid of bookings or dismissals, Eyemouth overcame the loss of an early goal to avenge their recent Qualifying League defeat by Berwick Rangers Reserves.
Josh Morris, taking Kenny O’Brien’s pass, put Rangers in front in only four minutes, blasting home from 25 yards.
In the first half both sides were denied by the woodwork, with Morris and Nick Clark hitting the bar. The equaliser was not long in coming. Steven Shennan took advantage of dithering by Berwick’s young defenders inside the penalty area, twisting to fire a slow, low shot which Grant Sandison could only touch on its way in.
Alan Spiers got in the way of another Morris strike, the first of a series of blocks by the home defence as Rangers unsuccessfully sought to re-take the lead, meaning the first 45 ended all square.
The second half opened with Berwick appealing for a penalty. There were further chances at both ends, Allan Ramsay shooting wide, Shennan being denied twice by keeper Sandison at the other end.
Sandison made another save to stop Lewis Walker scoring after crisp passing from Shennan and Sean Phillips. A 1-1 draw looked the most likely outcome until a burst of four goals in seven minutes. Jamie Doris played his way into trouble.
Clark reacted quickly, passing to Connor Lough who squared to Shennan to do the business. A minute later, Eyemouth increased their lead. A flick of Clark’s head ensured a low Phillips’ cross went in.
Berwick substitute Michael Robinson made his mark immediately after coming on, sending Sam Todd to the corner to deliver a cross from which Morris beat Mutch with a downwards header. Eyemouth promptly restored their two goal advantage with eight minutes left. Another Berwick replacement, Sean Guiney, downed Lough and Shennan easily beat Sandison with the spot kick.
A frenetic second half finished with the post denying Morris the game’s second hat trick, Steven Finlayson shooting the rebound straight to Mutch.
