Ross Butterworth and Ali Proctor in a Ford Escort Mexico dominated this year’s Berwick Classic Rally organised by Berwick and District Motor Club.
They took the lead on the first regularity with some very accurate timekeeping and as the event moved on to the timed tests on private land they set a string of fastest times.
Whilst the winner’s trophy head south to Lancashire Berwick’s John Bertram, accompanied by Andrew Fish, chased the leaders all the way in his RS2000 and finished the event a minute and 14 seconds in arrears. Proving that much older technology can also cut the mustard Durham’s Tom Hall and Bob Hargreaves finished third in a Riley Elf with a comfortable margin of 14 seconds over the more modern Rover of David Charlson and Paul Taylor.
Last year’s winner Dunbar’s Dougie Humphrey with Richard Crozier in the navigator’s seat of his Mini Cooper S ended up in fifth spot.
The event attracted over 50 crews from all over the UK in a wide variety of cars from a rare Allard K2 to the more modern sports and saloon cars of the fifties and sixties. The trophy for Spirit of the Rally went to North Berwick Crew of Graeme and Eilidh McKinnell in an MGB GT. This was thirteen year old Eilidh’s first event and she was holding her own against far more experienced crews until Dad’s over exuberance on one of the Sunday tests saw them retire with some minor damage to the wiring.
