Berwick crashed to defeat in their final away league fixture of the season at Somerset on Friday.

The loss means the Bandits, who only have one home league meeting remaining, are now destined to finish in the bottom four.

The Rebels are pressing for the title and they weren’t prepared to do Berwick any favours.

Jason Doyle stormed to a flawless 15-point maximum, and fellow Australian Josh Grajczonek also went unbeaten as he rattled off 13+2 from his five rides. Another Aussie, Alex Davies, won four of his five races.

But perhaps the star of the show for the home side was Charles Wright, who in his first meeting at the Oak Tree Arena after joining the club was paid for four victories in his 10+3 tally at reserve.

Berwick, meanwhile, only managed one race winner all night, in the shape of Sebastian Alden in his second outing.

The first two heats were shared, but after Alex Davies won heat three for a 4-2, Somerset, after getting their noses in front, turned the screw and Berwick simply had no answer.

Alden’s win came in heat five, which kept the score down to 17-13, but with Doyle and Grajczonek in such dominating form, there was only ever going to be one outcome.

After the meeting, team manager for the night, John Anderson said: “I thought early on we had the fight in us to make a go of this match and with the scores quite close it wasn’t looking at all bad.

“But the Rebels are a class side, full of talent, and to that end they ran out with a comfortable victory, but we added some good exciting moments of racing too.”
