Two young jui jitsu competitors from Berwick are making a big name for themselves in their chosen sport.
Abbi Rae and Matheos Ferreira have both been invited to join the Junior UK BJJ elite squad.
They have also been invited to compete as part of a UK team in Germany later this month.
And in addition to that, there is also a chance that they might travel to South America later this year to compete in Brazil.
Both Abbi and Matheos won gold medals at the Manchester International Open in April, and as a result of their performances there, they were invited to train with the UK youth team in Birmingham last weekend.
At the training there were 73 youngsters, some of them world champions and the best in Europe all looking for a place in the Youth Squad .
After three and a half hours of intense military training, the youngsters had to spar one to one with the other competitors, selected by Neil Simkin, who is the youth squad coach.
Matheos and Abbi had no problem proving why they are number one in their own category.
After training they were told they had been selected to be part of the UK BJJ Youth Squad.
Then, three days later came a big surprise - coach Thiago Ferreira opened his email box to find message from the Youth Squad saying that they had both been selected to represent the UK in Dortmund, Germany on May 23.
Before this, they will both compete in the British Open in Coventry on May 16, and they will use this as a warm up for Germany.
Coach Ferreira will travel with them and he said “This is the beginning of their dream. I’m sure they will put up a great performance.
“They are young, but they already have the right mind set and know what they want.
“Both Abbi and Matheos are unbeaten, they have never lost a fight and this will be a great challenge for them.”
Abbi’s mother, Lani, added: “I am so proud of them both. They train hard and there is talk about a trip to Brazil later this year, but we will take it one step at a time. I am so pleased for them.”
