BERWICK BANDITS 45
GLASGOW TIGERS 45
Glasgow took a draw from their League Cup encounter at Shielfield on Saturday and as a result progressed to the semi-finals of the competition.
This was a meeting which was extremely close throughout, with never more than four points separating the sides.
Berwick were without the injured Thomas Jorgensen and Matty Wethers, with Stuart Robson and Simon Nielsen stepping in as guests.
And they had an immediate impact on proceedings, by winning the first two races, the pair going on to take six chequered flags, including the decisive heats 14 and 15, amassing a total of 20 points between them.
Anders Mellgren made a quicker than expected return from knee ligament damage, but his three points were just as vital a contribution as any other of his team-mates.
For the Tigers, who operated rider replacement for the injured Richie Worrall, their top three of William Lawson, Aaron Summers and former Bandit Ben Barker were always amongst the points, paid for. 35 between them. But it was another ex-Berwick rider, Fernando Garcia, who perhaps did most of the damage, racing to three fine victories on his way to a superb, and perhaps unexpected 12 paid 13 tally.
With the top Tigers in such good form, the visitors held the upper hand for most of the meeting, although the efforts of Robson, Nielsen, Seb Alden and Kevin Doolan meant the Bandits managed to hang on to their tails.
The home side hauled themselves level at 27-27 in heat nine and went 32-29 in front after 10.
A 1-5 from Summers and Lawson in 13 put Glasgow back in the driving seat at 38-40, but Bandits dug deep at the end, and with Nielsen and Robson coming good, despite a blown engine on the start line for Alden in 15, and Mellgren taking the vital third place in heat 14 after he was passed by Barker, it was all square at the finish.
Berwick: Robson 11, Nielsen 9, Alden 9, Doolan 7+1, Pijper 3+1, Mellgren 3+1, Carr 3. Glasgow: Garcia 12+1, Lawson 11+2, Summers 11, Barker 10+1, Ayres 1, Lunna 0, Worrall rider replacement.
Berwick begin their Premier League campaign this Saturday with a home meeting against Scunthorpe.
