EYEMOUTH’S Joyce Mark has become European age group triathlon champion.

Mark was in superb form at the Eilat ETU Triathlon European championships, held in Israel at the weekend, when she stormed to a first place finish in the 50-54 female age group sprint.

The Eyemouth Leisure Centre worker finished over four minutes ahead of GB rivals Jane Saunders and Kath Blakey who were second and third.

This has been Mark’s main goal for the season and many of her colleagues have helped her in her quest to win this major title. They include swim coaches Neil Tait and Ian Learmonth, fitness instructor David Dempster and Alex Aitchison who trains with Joyce at Berwick Wheelers.

Susanne Pemble, former Welsh record holder, and Louise Scott, former GB junior international swimmer, have also been training with Joyce. Physio Leanne Gillie also deserves credit as Joyce has been carrying a niggling injury for some time now and Leanne has helped her maintain fitness.

Joyce has certainly made her Mark over the last 15 years by winning three major titles including the World Triathlon age group title, World Duathlon age group title and now European age group title, making her one of the greatest athletes ever to have come from Berwickshire.
