Manderston Cricket Club’s season finally started on Sunday as they travelled to Tillside, near Etal, on a day which began with showers but eventually proved to be perfect, sunny, cricketing weather.
With only nine players, this was always going to be a tough match but Manderston got off to a fine start in the field with both Tillside openers going cheaply. A good stand followed which was eventually broken, and wickets fell at regular intervals to restrict Tillside to 164 for eight off 35 overs. Pick of the batsmen was A Hindmarsh with a well constructed 50.
Young opening bowler D. Richards picked up three wickets for 24 in two excellent spells, and his dad also got a couple, the other wickets being shared around the other bowlers. Wicketkeeper M. Taylor should also be congratulated on a largely blemish free display. Tillside very kindly lent Manderston a fielder and the game was, as ever, played in a very friendly spirit.
The excellent tea may have contributed to the somewhat lazy batting that followed. Wickets fell with alarming frequency and with only one partnership of note between debutante J. Hickey and captain J. Lindsay, who top scored with 32, Manderston fell short of the target, being all out for 92. C. MacGregor got three wickets, with the other five bowlers getting one each.
Manderston play friendlies on Sundays (40 over matches) and occasional Thursdays (20 over matches), with net practices on Thursdays from 6.30-8pm at the home ground, located behind Manderston House.
Next week’s match is at home to Alnmouth. Players of any age, gender and level of ability are warmly welcomed.
