Berwick Bandits 51, Glasgow Tigers 42: Lee Complin scored a 15-point maximum as newlook Berwick Bandits roared to victory over Glasgow Tigers in the League Cup at Shielfield.

Lubos Tomicek and Jason King both made their debut for the Bandits, but it was No1 Ricky Ashworth and skiiper Complin who led from the front to stamp their authority over the meeting.

Club co-owner John Anderson said: “Jason King may not have got a stack of points tonight, but his spirit was strong and you could see his determination with every bend and once he gets match-fit he will be a fine racer for us and as for Lubos Tomicek, what can I say? He was excellent and took seven brilliantly won points indicating there’s some big things to come in the future from our new Czech. As for Ricky and Lee, well it doesn’t get much better does it?”

Glasgow’s Joe Screen took a massive Heat One win over Ricky Ashworth with new Bandit Jason King, in his first competitive race of the year, getting used to things at the back in a Tigers’ 2-4.

Lubos Tomicek, also on his Berwick debut held on well in third as part of a shared race, whilst a superb first lap from Alex Edberg, sitting tight on track expert James Grieves to keep the Glasgow man at bay long enough to allow Lee Complin the chance to build up a big lead to take the win in the 4-2 with the score now 9-9.

With Complin well out in front in the fifth race, David Bellego was chasing hard behind Mason Compton for third place, but coming off the second bend on the last lap Compton, who had been getting repeatedly out of shape all race, drifted wide and caused Bellego to fall with the Tigers’ exclusion and a 4-2 awarded to Berwick putting the Bandits into the lead, 16-14.

Further wins for Ashworth and Sebastian Alden in two more 4-2s extended the Bandits lead to 24-18 after Heat Seven, but a superb gate to flag win for Tomicek added a surprise three points to the Bandits’ tally in the eighth taking the score to 27-21.

Ten down after 10 Glasgow nominated Screen for double points, but Alden made an incredible gate to lead well, but going into the second bend on lap three, the Swede lost total control to take a heavy fall, and excluded from the awarded Tigers’ 1-8, tightening the match to 36-33 with Screen taking a fortuitous six points.

A storming out side pass from third to first round his partner and Grieves for Complin brought the house down and another 4-2 to the Bandits extending the lead to five once more, whilst with his first heat win for the Bandits this season, Bellego’s superb Heat 14 gave the match to the Bandits.
