Following last weekend’s Ricky Ashworth benefit meeting at Shielfield, the rider’s family have expressed their thanks and gratitude to fans.
In a message to Berwick Speedway, who hosted the event in conjunction with Sheffield, Ashworth’s father Dave said:
“From the moment the entire stadium stood to offer a minute’s applause for my lad, I was just so proud. If there might be a bigger word than ‘thank-you’, then I’d use it.
“We went to see him on Sunday, to show him the trophy and his picture on the programme cover and told him what a fantastic night his friends on the track, in the stands and on the terraces had put on for him. All I can offer is our family’s eternal gratitude.”
Indications are that around £15,000 was raised from the meeting, money which will be passed on to Ashworth through the Speedway Riders. Benevolent Fund.
Dennis McCleary who was principle organiser of the event said “ It is never enough is it? However it is money we would not have accrued if we had not at least made efforts to stage the event which went well and I have spoken to Dave Ashworth and they seem very very happy with how it worked out.”
