The Berwickshire High School netball teams have finished their first-ever league campaign with silver and bronze medals.
In an impressive first season in the newly-formed Peebles League, the Berwickshire under-13 team won four of their six games to claim second place overall, while the under-14 team won three and drew one to finish in third.
Coached by Terry MacEachen, Mandy Lunn and Karen McKinlay, the teams have been training since last autumn, and played their first matches in the Aitkin Turner Netball League (Peebles League) at the end of October.
MacEachen said: “We are extremely proud of what the girls have achieved so far, not only in the way they play, but also in their team spirit which always shines through and has been noticed all over the Borders. After the S2s got knocked out of the Scottish Schools Cup, they all said was ‘don’t worry, we still have one team from Berwickshire still in, go S1s!’
“It’s this attitude and sports-manship that makes Team Berwickshire, and three very proud and happy coaches.”
The league, which has kick-started competitive netball across the Borders, reached its climax this month at The Gyes, Peebles, when the final four matches were played out. Seven teams from Peebles, Berwickshire, Hawick and Earls-ton took part in the contest, involving around 70 girls.
Twenty-one matches were played and 548 goals scored. Every game was hotly contested. With the league lead changing many times, and the scorelines so close, an extra set of medals were put on stand by for the final day of play in case of ties for each place.
The final placings were decided in the closing minute of the final game between Peebles A and Berwickshire under-14s. This exciting game saw the highest scoreline, 23-13. Peebles A emerged victorious, the only team to win every one of their six matches. Berwickshire under-13s took second place, and by just one point Berwickshire under-14s took third.
The Berwickshire High School netball teams have been training just over a year, and this was a fantastic achievement for their first league participation. The S1s are also through to the semi-finals of the Scottish Schools Cup.
Team Berwickshire are looking for a sponsor for the new S3s kit for August, please contact the school if you can help.
