GLASGOW 2014: Guy Learmonth qualifies for 800m final

Berwick’s Guy Learmonth ran the race of his life to qualify for tonight’s final of the 800m at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The 22-year-old Scotland athlete delighted the home crowd at Hampden Park in a thrilling semi-final last night by showed guts and determination to hold onto third place, crossing the line in a time of 1:47.78.

“My whole aim was to get to the final,” he said. “My legs were dying, but I’m in the Commonwealth final and that’s what matters. The Hampden roar pulled me over the line – I can’t explain the energy and the buzz it gives you.”

Victory in the first semi-final was never in doubt for Olympic champion David Rudisha as he eased away from the rest of the field with his Kenyan teammate Ferguson Cheruiyot Rotich.

Learmoth remained in third spot for the majority of the race, but was forced to hold off a late challenge from Jamaica’s Ricardo Cunningham to secure his place in the final.
