This was a clash between two teams that have struggled for consistency this season and were propping up the table in the Northern Alliance Nike First Division.
The visitors started more brightly and their fluid interplay between forwards and midfield runners caused all kinds of problems in the home defence.
It was somewhat against the run of play after 15 minutes that Wooler took the lead when good play on the right saw Connor Cowens beat the students’ full-back and crossed to James Scott who saw his low shot saved by the keeper but James Guthrie was at hand to score form the rebound, his first goal in the Northern Alliance.
Unfortunately this seemed to spur the visitors on and they dominated the remainder of the first half, scoring three goals through Monk, Bunn and Cross to take a deserved 3-1 half time lead.
Twenty minutes into the second half, and with the visitors looking more likely to score, a disputed decision led to a heated exchange between two Wooler players and the linesmen. After consultation the referee showed red cards to the two Wooler players.
This left the crowd and both teams nonplussed as it was not obvious what had happened !
Rather than feel hard done by Wooler made some changes and pressed on, whilst the visitors sat back and invited pressure. Wooler pulled a goal back through captain Michael Saunders with a diving header from a free kick and for the last 10 minutes continued to seek the equaliser without reward.
