HAWICK ROYAL ALBERT 1, BERWICK RANGERS RESERVES 0
Berwick Reserves suffered a second successive defeat last Saturday after a 6-1 away loss to a strong Ayr United side in the SPFL Reserve League in midweek.
In that game, Alan Forrest hit a hat trick, including a penalty, whilst ex-Glasgow Rangers’ star Kevin Kyle scored twice. Conor Scott got Berwick’s consolation from the spot.
At Albert Park, the only goal of the game came in the 25th minute, the result of a goalkeeping error by Lyle Sloan. He kicked the ball out to Ross Brady. Under pressure from two home players, Brady attempted to return the pass but Sloan hesitated before coming to meet it. When he did, the ball was blocked by Peter Keenan and then bounced towards Michael McKenzie for an easy tap-in.
Berwick’s best chance of the match had come earlier when Greig Tulloch hit the post after latching on to a long, airborne pass from Jordyn Gill.
In the second half, the Reserves pushed centre half Steven Bennett upfield where he was involved in an incident with Hawick counterpart Andrew Williamson. After the ensuing melee was broken up, the two main protagonists were sent off.
With time pressing, Brady tried a couple of shots from outside the box. Home keeper Dean Fry, a converted centre half from local amateurs Hawick United, competently handled them to make sure of his side’s deserved victory in a generally uninspiring encounter.
Berwick Rangers Reserves: Sloan, Davidson, Brady, Bennett, Fairbairn, C.Scott, Miller, Gill ( Meikle 60 ), Turner ( Finlayson 60 ), G.Tulloch ( Elliot 62 ), Anderson.
