The opening league game of the season saw Greenlaw travel away to league favourites Leithen Rovers.
It was Greenlaw who started the brightest and after only five minutes they had the ball in the back of the net when a Toby Culham through ball played in William Smillie who brushed his defender to the side and slotted it past the out coming keeper.
To everyone’s surprise the goal was disallowed for a foul.
The home side then started to come into the game and had the majority of possession, going close on a few occasions. After 20 minutes a Culham challenge in the penalty area resulted in the referee giving a penalty, but debutant Simmonds was equal to it to keep the score level.
In the second half Simmonds in the Greenlaw goal kept them in the game.
With Leithen pushing on this left them vulnerable to Greenlaw’s quick breaks and after a quick throw down the right Robin Brown turned his marker and smashed home a striker on the edge of the six yard box, but again this goal was disallowed for no real reason.
Leithen went close on a several occasions but their keeper was lucky to stay on the pitch following a challenge on Smillie.
The winner came in the very last minute when Simmonds parried a free kick and an alert striker turned the ball into the net.
