Berwick Reserves produced a battling performance against the new East of Scotland First Division champions in this League Cup quarter final tie at Hibs’ Training Centre near Tranent.
It wasn’t an easy afternoon for Berwick, who lost both centre backs during the course of the match. Damian Gielty, recently on the injury list, was a surprise inclusion but came off after only three minutes with further foot trouble.
James Elliot was taken to hospital with concussion after being hit in the face by the ball in the 62nd minute. Rangers were also forced to play the last 12 minutes with ten men, Stephen Anderson dismissed for dissent.
Hibs took the lead through Jordan Sinclair in the 25th minute. Josh Morris equalised from the spot in the 42nd after he was bundled over by Robert Wilson.
Hibs regained the lead two minutes later. Max Todd chipped keeper Ross McMullen who slipped as he came out to challenge Todd.
Second half action was end to end with Hibs goalie Kleton Perntreou making point blank saves from Greig Tulloch and Dean Carse.
Berwick were denied another penalty when Carse was taken down from behind by Dean Horrobine.
Pushing men forward to try to save the tie left depleted Rangers exposed at the back and in the 83rd minute, Jamie Beaton clinched it for Hibs with a 25 yard shot into the top corner of the net.
Berwick Rangers Reserves: McMullen, Saunderson, Brady, Gielty (Gill 3), Elliot (Graham 62), G.Tulloch, Anderson, O’Brien, Turner, Morris, Carse.
