Birtley St Joseph 0-1 Wooler

Wooler moved up to third place in the Northern Alliance first division with this hard fought away victory over Birtley.

For the second week in a row Wooler played in one of only two fixtures in the league played last Saturday on a wet and muddy pitch.

Both teams had to slog it out in a very competitive game. Wooler matched up their opposition man for man and the defence was outstanding with Michael Saunders, Alan McFall, Liam Hardie and Andy Thompson all impressing.

Chances were few and far between as for long periods the gamewas dominated by the respective defences, but Martin Nesbitt in the Wooler goal was on hand to deal with anything that got past the defence.

As the game progressed Stuart Bertram and Tom Farr began to dominate in midfield for Wooler and with 10 minutes to go Luke Strangeways was released on the left wing and his cross was met in the middle by Gareth Pearson to fire home.
