Coldstream and Duns football clubs paid tribute on Saturday to Ian ‘Frenchie’ Clark, a prolific scorer for both clubs, who sadly lost his fight against cancer last week.
A minute’s silence was impeccably observed by all present and both teams wore black arm bands as their mark of respect. Coldstream also flew their St Andrews flag at half mast over the clubhouse.
A six minute spell sealed this King Cup tie for the Dingers. This was only the second ever King Cup tie between the sides at Home Park, the last one being a semi-final encounter back in 1953.
In a scrappy first half both teams struggled to come to terms with the strong gusty wind. One of the few chances fell to John Crawford when he was set up by Des Sutherland but the big striker shot straight at Sean Robertson in the Duns goal. Duns had the ball in the net on 35 minutes when Jordan Lauder netted but referee Paul Hanlon had already blown for a free kick.
No one could have guessed how the second half would start as after only six minutes the game was over with Duns leading 3-0.
The lads in red and black came out of the blocks like greyhounds and with barely one minute on the clock a Des Chisholm free kick was flicked on by Lauder and the ball fell to young Pattenden who shot past Streamer’s keeper Stewart from eight yards.
Only a minute later ex-Coldstream player Luke Strangeways latched on to another flick from Lauder and he slammed the ball home to make it 2-0.
Worse was to follow when, from a corner, another ex-Streamer big Dougie Brydon, rose like a salmon in the nearby Tweed to head beyond the despairing Streamer’s keeper and it was 3-0 to Duns.
Both sides made changes before Coldstream almost reduced the deficit when Sutherland beat several defenders only for his shot to be saved by the feet of Duns keeper Robertson.
The game was played out in an ever increasing wind to see Duns record a really solid victory.
