Berwick Rangers Reserves 3-3 Ormiston
In his programme notes, Berwick Rangers Reserves manager Mark Lamb predicted this would be a tough match and ultimately that is what his team got, Ben Miller salvaging a point with a spectacular equalier.
Yet, at the end of a first half they completely dominated, the Reserves were two up and appeared to be coasting.
Virtually all the first half scoring chances were created by Berwick and two of them produced results.
In the ninth minute, Ormiston goalkeeper David Simmonds was beaten by the bounce of Jonny Fairbairn’s downward header from a Kenny O’Brien corner.
Eleven minutes later, Josh Morris, having temporarily switched to the right flank, forwarded a cross. When a defender failed to cut it out, John Ferguson seized the opportunity to double the lead.
Ben Miller forced Simmonds into a spectacular leaping save as Rangers kept up the pressure.
Ormiston’s one real scoring chance arrived late in the half. Despite being shepherded by three defenders, Jordan Young broke through only to shoot wide of Grant Sandison’s near post.
Ormiston were a team transformed in the second half, displaying a confidence and self-belief not evident in the previous 45 minutes. They began to find chinks in a hitherto sturdy defence and hit Berwick with three goals in eleven minutes.
Six minutes into the second half, Brian McEwan netted at the second attempt after a Richie Weir cross came over from the right. Three minutes later, a Conor Ramage back header set Young away to confidently slip the ball past Sandison.
Again given acres of space, Ormiston went ahead when Ramage collected full back Stewart Davidson’s long ball and also turned it past Sandison.
In the end, Rangers were grateful to Miller for salvaging a point when, after receiving Michael Robinson’s slide rule pass, he unleashed an unstoppable shot from 35 yards in the 75th minute.
Robinson was then through but Simmonds was able to kick the ball away from him. Before the end, O’Brien headed an excellent Ferguson cross stright at Simmonds and later, had a shot cleared off the line. But the visitors looked just as likely to snatch a winner with Sandison at full stretch to palm away Craig Fisher’s last minute free kick.
