Mason frustrated Josh Morris on numerous occcasions including a great second half save to match one from Ewan Saunderson as he completed a solo run in the opening half.

Berwick topped the first half corner count but had only a one goal lead at the interval to show for it. It came in the 15th minute when Ben Miller headed in a long Dean Hoskins’ cross at the far post.

Seconds later, Duns striker Stevie Shennan gave Michael Dunlop the slip but his attempted lob over home keeper Michael Andrews was uncharacteristically weak and wayward.

Dean Carse followed suit at the other end by lobbing the ball over both Mason and the bar after the otherwise solid Gary Renton failed to cut out a Kenny O’Brien cross.

The second half opened with Duns trying to dictate terms as the fog temporarily thickened but in truth, they only had two real chances in all.

Two yards in front of goal, Michael Stewart’s glancing header on the end of a sharp Mark Weatherburn ball travelled in the wrong direction. Much later, Martyn Tait put Shennan through when Rangers lost the ball but the number nine had no ammunition in his boot and Andrews was untroubled.

Even as Berwick began to wear down the visitors, Duns, encouraged by Mason’s heroics, defended well but they succumbed in the 72nd minute to Greig Tulloch’s classy finish after he collected a well judged crossfield ball from Dunlop.

As Duns tired, Mason tipped an O’Brien corner over the bar. Leigh Walker cleared off the line whilst Tulloch spurned the chance of a second goal with a poorly placed header.

In the final minute, Morris was on to the ball after Steven McHoul struggled to kick it away and finally appeared to beat Mason. But Carse nipped in to get the final touch before the ball crossed the line to lay claim to Berwick’s third goal.
