Dominant Duns ease to victory despite conditions

Duns 29, Berwick 0

DUNS second string played a friendly against local rivals Berwick.

The Hardens was deemed unfit for play so the match was switched to the new Berwickshire High School.

Conditions underfoot were very slippery and with a wet ball thwarted the normal Duns open style of play. The conditions proved decisive throughout the game with many handling errors from both sides.

In the early stages honours were fairly even with each side trying to gain an advantage. The deadlock was eventually broken after 20 minutes when Stuart Davies scored under the posts after fine work from the pack with Jamie Semple adding the conversion (just). This was closely followed up by Matty Taylor nipping in to touch down in the corner giving Duns a half time lead of 12-0.

The second half was a much better performance from Duns who dominated with glimpses of the usual sparkle. Duns added three tries after the break, from Dane Ivison, Danny Lamb and Tom Swan. Danny Lamb converted one.

The highlight of the second half was not the three good tries scored but a 30 metre charge from Fraser Howie. Taking the ball at pace the bulky forward crashed through several attempted tackles before eventually being halted short of the line. Last week we had the bullocking run from Scott Turnbull who had another good game but this week the Fraser Howie effort was akin to a charging hippo who had just been stung on the backside by a wasp!

Despite the poor conditions the seconds tried to play open rugby and credit the the visitors who defended well and made life difficult for the young Duns team. Another win for the seconds and back to league action next week.
