And after a disappointing 3-2 away defeat at Elgin on Saturday - a game they led 2-0 at one stage - manager Jimmy Crease admitted that he can’t wait for the final whistle to blow so he can start building for next season.

Crease described Saturday’s first-half performance against Elgin, when Paul Currie scored twice, as ‘‘excellent’’.

“We might have gone in at half-time four or five up,” he said.

But he described the second- half performance as ‘‘terrible’’.

Now, only Albion Rovers stand between Berwick and the end of what can only be described as a season of under-achievement.

Stuart Callaghan, who missed the entire first half of the season with a broken ankle, but who has been an ever-present since his return, said: “It’s definitely been a case of deja vu.

“Like last season we made a very good start, but around Christmas and New Year things turned sour for us, and again this has meant us missing out on the play-offs.”

Andy McLean, who has already signed a new two-year contract, added: “We have some very talented players here.

‘‘With the squad we have we should be winning the league, not fighting for a play-off place in the final weeks of the season.”

Crease says that he has already had a meeting with chairman Brian Porteous to talk tactics for next season’s promotion campaign. “We have looked at all the players on our books and we now know which players we would like to stay and those who will be released.

“The players will all be told of my decision after the Albion game.

‘‘Those we would like to stay will be offered new contracts in due course - it will be up to them whether or not to accept them.”

After Saturday’s game Ber-wick will hold their annual presentation of trophies for the Players of the Year, which this year is being held in the Magdalene Fields Golf Club at 7pm.

The presentations will be for first team, reserves and youth team, and fans are invited to attend.
