SIR, - I was both flattered and honoured that Michael Reilly should begin the article regarding his retiral recently by quoting me.
When I often said to him that he had the best job in the world it was by way of appreciation of his skillful and artistic photographs of our wonderful Berwickshire countryside which appeared on the letters page every week.
Over the 36 years that Mike has been with “the News” he has also had a front seat view of all the news, cultural, historical and sports stories of Berwickshire and its people.
I would like to thank Mike and Joe Payne who retired previously, for their long service in covering school events and sport in particular.
Both of them were only too pleased to attend school and sporting functions often in unsociable hours to get the picture to promote the many good things going on in all our Berwickshire schools and sporting clubs.
One photograph by Mike stands out in my memory.
When determined to get that special shot of Eyemouth for the letters page he asked me to take him out in the sailing club rescue boat to get what turned out to be a superb photo of Eyemouth from the sea.
I am sure that the tradition and high standards set by Mike and Joe will continue with those now appointed to the photography department.
In the meantime I wish Mike and Joe a long and healthy retirement.
