ON Saturday, August 27, divers travelled from all over the UK to the St Abbs and Eyemouth Voluntary Marine Reserve to take part in the annual underwater photography competition, the Splash In.

The competition is now in its 24th year and is a favourite event on many underwater photographers’ calendars.

Diving conditions on the Saturday morning were tricky for the 25 competitors, however, most managed two dives in which they captured what they hoped would be a prize winning image.

As in previous years, the competition had three categories: Marine Life Portrait (close up images of the reserve’s amazing marine life); Reserve Atmospheric (wide angle shots showing the stunning underwater landscape); and Most Humorous Shot (where the photographers use their imagination in an attempt to raise a smile).

Impressed with the shots captured by the divers and their cameras this year, Georgia Conolly, marine ranger said: “It’s fantastic to see the diversity of the underwater world captured in these stunning photographs.

“They bring to life sights and scenes that most folk will never encounter first hand and as such they are an invaluable tool in the reserve’s work of raising awareness of the special wildlife found beneath the waves just off St Abbs and Eyemouth.”

Competitors and spectators gathered at the St Abbs Village Hall for a slideshow of all the images on Sunday, August 28. The audience acted as judges voting for their favourite photos. The photo voted overall winner was taken by Martin Davies and was entitled ‘Pollack on the wreck of Glanmire’.

Already looking ahead to next year, the event’s Silver Jubilee year, Georgia added: “We had an excellent level of sponsorship this year, with over £2000 worth of prizes donated by local and national supporters’.

“Next year’s competition will be our 25th Splash In event and we are planning to hold a special celebration, so get the date in your diaries for next year: August 25, 2012!’
