The runaway winner of our 2013 Pet Idol competition is Monty, from Etal.
A year old, Monty is the beloved family pet of the Bakers - Richard and Victoria, and their daughters Holly and Georgia.
He beat off competition from packs of cats and dogs to take the title.
Monty’s distinctive corkscrew fur is all down to his breeding. He is what is known as a cocker-poo, that is half cocker spaniel, and half poodle.
“We’ve had him a year,” said owner Victoria. “He’s a local boy, he was born down in Chatham.”
“Monty was one of the last to be left in this litter,” said Holly, aged 12, “and we were thinking about another puppy, who was actually a really different colour to him, but there was something about the way he looked at us. I think it’s probably his eyelashes, they’re really lovely and long.”
“We’re so glad we found him, he’s such a friendly creature to have around,” added Victoria.
“It was originally Richard who floated the idea,” she continued, “and then of course, we all urged him on to do it.
“It’s just great to have such a friendly boy with us in such a lovely part of the world,” said Victoria, who moved to Etal with Richard and the girls six years ago.
“And I’m the one who helps take him out for walks and everything,” Holly chipped in.
Monty is the proud winner of £100 in vouchers from Renton Swan Vets, based in Coldstream, Berwick and Duns.
“I don’t really know what we can get him to celebrate,” said Richard.
“Although he does look like he could do with a facial, or at least a bit of a shampoo and a trim!”
