About 40 horses and riders braved awful conditions to participate in the 405th Riding of the Bounds in Berwick on May Day.

The heavy rain and cold temperatures deterred a number of riders from taking part, and also had an impact on the number of spectators.

Chief marshal Ed Swales received permission from Mayor Isabel Hunter to check the ancient boundaries of the town. He then gave a rendition of ‘The Berwick Song’ before leading the cavalcade on its 15-mile journey.

Joining the riders was Sheriff of Berwick, Michael Richardson, who performed his civic duties on the town hall steps before climbing on board Larry.

The Mayor said: “It’s a pity about the weather but it’s still a fantastic occasion and definitely one of the highlights of my year. There’s no doubt it also has added significance this year with the Scottish independence vote coming up.”
