Under-age drinking concern

ALTHOUGH Berwickshire doesn’t appear to have as big a problem as other parts of the region when it comes to under-age drinking, as we edge nearer to a busy season of summer festivals, Lothian and Borders Police’s safer communities Inspector John Scott said the issue will remain at the forefront of the force’s mind.

Between March-May 2012, 16 minors were found with alcohol in Berwickshire, out of a total of 122 in the Borders. Inspector Scott said the lower figure was to be expected given Berwickshire’s rural locality, but it was still too many.

“Whether it’s in the central Borders or in Berwickshire we are always working to reduce the level of underage drinking in the region as it is one of the main contributors to anti-social behaviour,” he commented.
