Duns and District Parishes are giving tubes of Smarties to all church members as their fund raising effort for 2015.
Each year the parishes try to have some special Stewardship activity and this year they are trying something a little different. The Kirk Elders are distributing the tubes as part of their normal district visiting prior to this week’s Holy Communion. Each household will receive the quarterly Newsletter, a tube of Smarties and a Church Membership Review leaflet. Members are invited to enjoy the sweets and then over the few months to use the empty tube to collect coins for the Kirk funds. The tubes can take pound coins but folk might decide to go for 20p instead.
Minister, Rev Stephen Blakey, said: “I suppose the worse that can happen is that people just enjoy the Smarties.
“This unusual fundraiser is being combined with a review of our membership roll. Now that Duns Parish Church is united with Bonkyl Kirk and Edrom Kirk the roll stands at 625 members. This is a mixture of regular attenders, those who attend less often, and those who for a whole variety of reasons, such as infirmity and illness, are now longer able to attend.
“We probably have some folk listed who really have little interest in the life and work of the church, and we feel we should give them the opportunity to have their names removed so that they don’t receive unwanted newsletters or visits or tubes of smarties. No one will be removed unless they ask for this! The Review will help the Kirk Session ensure that we are doing our best to provide pastoral care and support for those who wish it.”
Duns and District Parishes are now linked to Langton and Lammermuir Kirk, a total charge of five church buildings spread over 110 square miles of Berwickshire.
