The intriguing tale of Peter Rabbit and Farmer McGregor

WHEN BBC 1’s ‘The One Show’ googled ‘Farmer McGregor’ last week as part of a piece they were doing about a new Peter Rabbit story they struck gold when they found Colin McGregor at Coldstream Mains.

Not only does he have the same name as the infamous farmer in ‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit’ but it just so happens that he farms on Lennel estate where author Beatrix Potter is believed to have come up with the character Peter Rabbit while on holiday there.

“They googled Farmer McGregor and came up with me!” said Colin.

“Once I told them the Beatrix Potter connection with Lennel they were hooked.”

Oscar winning actress Emma Thompson appeared on ‘The One Show’ sofa to discuss a letter she had received from Peter Rabbit (via publishers Frank Warne) inviting her to write a sequel to Beatrix Potter’s beloved children’s story that has sold over 45 million copies worldwide.

In Emma’s sequel ‘The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit’ he travels to Scotland to trace his Scottish roots (whether he travels to Coldstream is not clear).

And while Emma was talking about the book ‘Farmer McGregor’, who chased the mischievous and disobedient young Peter Rabbit around his garden, also appeared live on the programme via a video link from his office at Coldstream Mains.

And the coincidences don’t stop there. Because while Colin was speaking to the programme’s presenters Matt Baker and Alex Jones behind him on the wall of his office was a photograph of himself and his wife Jill with Matt Baker at last year’s Farmers Weekly Awards ceremony where he received the UK arable farmer of the year award.
