The incident on the A697 near Westruther resulted in the death of 18-year-old Scott Johnston of Earlston.

Police say the Lauder teenager was arrested following enquiries and a report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal.

Following his death, tributes were paid to Mr Johnston, who played for his village football side Earlston Rhymers.

Rhymers manager Lee Manderson said at the time: “He was a cracking lad and it is a sad loss for all his pals and everyone in Earlston.”

And former Earlston boss Aidan Hume added: “Scott had a great attitude to the game and took instructions well.

“He was a joy to work with and never complained, which is very rare these days in amateur football.”

A service in January for Mr Johnston, an apprentice agricultural engineer, saw around 600 mourners pack into Earlston Parish Church to pay their respects.
