THIS week Terry, our secretary, has written about the work he does for the trust. This has recently been to try to find easy ways for people to donate to the Trust. Terry also is our ‘webmaster’ organising our website and trying to make it as interesting as possible as well as keeping everyone up to date with news items. I will let his piece speak for itself and will catch you all up on what’s happening at the shed next week.
The Trust relies entirely on donations to continue our work of rescuing wildlife, and whilst you can always pop your spare change into one of our collection boxes, in the last couple of years I have been setting up some interesting new fundraising services using the web and mobile phones, and I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about them.
On-line shopping has become very popular and by registering for EasyFundraising you can raise money for the Trust while you shop at a large range of popular stores such as Amazon, Argos etc. Each store allows a percentage of the purchase price or a fixed sum for a transaction which is paid to us. It’s easy and costs you nothing. So why not have a go?
We all use search engines (e.g. Google) to find things on the web and an offshoot of EasyFundraising is EasySearch, which raises money for the Trust by simply using it instead of your usual search engine. It only raises a small amount each search, but it all adds up and costs you nothing to use.
We also have a scheme for direct on-line donations run as a not-for-profit service by an arm of Virgin Money. Donations can be made by debit/credit cards or even by PayPal. If you are a taxpayer you can also register for Gift Aid and we get an extra 25%. This service can also be used to organise and collect sponsorship for your own events, such as marathon runs or bungee jumps. One of our volunteers used this successfully when doing a sponsored swim.
Our latest idea is a donation by text service called Just Text Giving. This is an easy way to donate small amounts at any time or place, as long as you have a signal. Use your mobile to send a text message e.g. “Swan15 £10” to 70070 and your donation is deducted from your pay as you go balance or added to your monthly account. Amounts from as little £1 up to £10 are possible and again Gift Aid is available if your mobile is internet enabled.
My other job is producing the Trust’s web site (mentioned below), and there you can find further information and links to all these services, as well as recent editions of “Swan Notes” when you can’t access a copy of this newspaper. Thanks for your help
