Scottish Borders Council are urging people in Berwickshire not to lose their right to vote.
Borderes will soon receive their annual canvass form - the piece of paper that registers them to vote.
Each year the local electoral registration officer compiles a new electoral register by sending out forms to every property in the area. By completing and returning this form, Borders residents will make sure they are included on the new electoral register and that they are able to vote in any forthcoming elections.
Mark Dickson, electoral registration officer at SBC explained: “If you’re not registered to vote, then you can’t make a decision about who represents you at a local, national or European level.
“All you have to do is complete the annual canvass form that will be coming through your letterbox this autumn and you’ll be able to help choose the people that make the decisions which affect your everyday life.
“Registering to vote is very simple. Just complete the annual canvass form, sign it and pop it in the post. It will only take a few minutes for you to secure your right to vote. If there have been no changes to your household since last year, you can save time and money by using the telephone or internet service detailed on the annual canvass form and there will be no need to post your form back.”
Residents can opt on the form to have their details excluded from the edited register so their details cannot be bought by individuals and commercial organisations. Fr more information contact your local Electoral Registration Officer on 01835 825100 or visit www.aboutmyvote.co.uk
