Local MSP John Lamont has congratulated those involved in the Scottish Borders Council’s Floral Gateway Awards.
He lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament praising the communities for all their work to make the towns and villages of the Borders so attractive for residents and visitors alike.
This year’s winners and runners-up were celebrated at a ceremony this week.
The results were:
· Champion of Champions – Melrose
· Town – 1, Peebles; 2, Galashiels
· Large Village – 1, Coldstream; 2, Newtown St Boswells; 3, Lauder
· Small Village – 1, Coldingham; 2, Greenlaw; 3, Ancrum
· Wee Village – 1, Westruther; 2, Birgham; 3, Whitsome
Mr Lamont said: “I know that a number of communities across the Borders have worked really hard to put on these fantastic floral displays.
“In my constituency, particular praise must go to Coldstream, Coldingham and Westruther for winning in their respective categories.
“Everyone involved has done a fantastic job in making our already very picturesque Borders communities even more welcoming to visitors. I hope that both local residents and tourists will get out to enjoy their efforts in the coming months.”
He added: “After a brilliant summer of festivals and ridings, these awards are just another example of the fantastic community spirit which exists in the Borders. This is something we should all cherish and work hard towards protecting.”
